The Controversy of “Eliza Harris” by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - Literature Essay Samples

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper’s â€Å"Eliza Harris† was written in a time where the world was an unforgiving brutal place for African American slaves. Harper uses an intense amount of emotion to try and create a sense of empathy from her readers. She is trying to instill fear and terror in her readers by describing the ugly truth and reality of the lives of African Americans in the United States during this time period. This poem speaks to the individual by humanizing the character Eliza Harris. Harper was an African American abolitionist who lived right in the middle of a time where slavery was very prominent. Even after the Civil War that ended slavery, Harper continued to fight for women’s rights. By writing a piece like this Harper has a lot to lose. She may lose support of people who disagree with her, which unfortunately was a lot of people during this time period. Harper uses fear, introspective ideas making â€Å"the individual† relevant, as well as presenting her democratic ideas in a different way that made an impact on her readers. Harper uses a fear factor to appeal to her readers sense of empathy for humanity. One example of how she does this is, â€Å"How the depths of the forest may echo around / With the shrieks of despair, and the bay of the hound?† (23-24). In this quote Harper is not only appealing to emotion but readers can almost hear the shrieks. Also, when a hound is baying it is a gruesome sound that cannot be ignored which would inevitably create a chilling reaction. After reading this it would be hard to not imagine what feelings would ensue if someone was surrounded by these noises. Harper wanted this reaction, she used heavy metrics and simple rhymes so that there was emphasis on the words that she was using. However, her writing was still formal enough that anyone could read it and she hoped that this would cause everyone to get the same dark feeling from her writing. As people read on, it is hard to not put emphasis on the last words of each line because of the heavy metrics and word c hoice. This makes readers unable to ignore the severity of the problem at-hand. Harper had a way of speaking to the individual effectively. She does this to pull the readers into her writing by making it feel like they are part of the story and are actually meeting the character, Eliza Harris. Harper appeals to people who have ever loved someone such as families and especially appeals to mothers. Eliza is willing to do anything in her power to keep her infant child from slavery. An example where Harper appeals to families and mothers is when she writes, â€Å"She heeded no danger, she paused to not think! / For she is a mother – her child is a slave— / And she’ll give him his freedom, or find him a grave! (6-8). For a mother to say that she would rather her child did not live, rather than her child becoming a product of slavery speaks volumes. For white Americans that are not a product of slavery this is a way for them to understand what it is like to be a mother going through the pain and fear of the unknown regarding the future of them an d their child. Any mother that has a bond with her child will hopefully feel how terrified Eliza is, this is exactly what Harper wanted to happen. Harpers style of writing is a little different that other writings during her time because of her introspectiveness that made the speaker and subject different. In the beginning Harper says, â€Å"us†, it is never clear about who us is though. It is introspective in the way that readers know what Harpers opinion is but, non-introspective in the way that the actual piece is not about Harper specifically. In this quote Harper speaks her opinion through her characters, Oh! How shall I speak of my proud country’s shame? Of the stains on her glory, how give them their name? How say that her banner in mockery waves – Her â€Å"star-spangled banner† – o’er millions of slaves? (17-20) This is Harper expressing her opinion but putting it in her writing instead of putting her opinion out to the public using dialogue. She is basically saying, how can Americans claim that they are inclusive and claim their country is â€Å"star-spangled† if there is still millions of slaves suffering. During this time period a lot of American writers wrote in a more narrative way where the â€Å"I† was present in their writing, talking about themselves specifically. Harper defies these norms by expressing her opinion through her characters. The way that Harper writes is almost neoclassical in the aspect that some of these lines are satirical, mocking the unbelievable nature of white American’s against slaves. What makes her writing romantic is the introspectiveness and the opinion that is given in her writing. This also speaks to the way that Harper presents her democratic ideas, raising awareness about the mistreatment of African Americans in the United States. Harper presents these ideas in such a direct, definite, and satirical way that implies that white Americans are stupid to even be living this way. Harper also uses the word â€Å"us† to pull readers into her writing, when read aloud people listening will include themselves in that â€Å"us†. She explains her views to show her passion for justice, in her eyes this will hopefully cause readers to feel the same way. An example of Harper explaining white American views in a way that is almost mocking their way of life is when Harper says,  "A woman whose crime is the hue of her face?† (22). This simplifies slavery in a way that makes other readers stop to think about the reason why slaves are considered â€Å"slaves†. Is it really just because of their different skin color? Why do white families treat African Americans with such poor mistreatment, but they do not treat white Americans nearly the same way? Harper writes using questions so that when â€Å"Eliza Harris† is read aloud people can hear the satirical mockery and hopefully begin to question their ways of life. This was meant to be read aloud, and it is meant to create a sense of empathy and for people to begin to question the way that the United States is. Harper created controversy about something that was very prominent during this time against people of her race. This was a bold and very brave move on her part speaking against the norms and fighting for African Americans and women. Her use of fear, the relevant use of â€Å"the individual† and the way that she presents her democratic ideas was such a huge piece of commentary during this era. Harper was an abolitionist that was brave enough to speak her mind in her writing to appeal to people enough to start a movement that would hopefully reach enough people to get white Americans to start to change the way that they treated others.

The subsidiaries thought that the financial targets which were given to then did not have any link with the actual picture of the economic condition of the subsidiaries companies. Several structural issues also came into existence such as the pressurising reporting system, capital allocation, issues concerning the product, along with geographical issues. Controlling the subsidiaries was indeed proving to be difficult as each subsidiary had different problems and demands. The organisation needed to stop duplicative operations and rationalise the overlapping activities. In order to make the strategic management more effective and to bring stability, Morales tried to bring some organisation changes. However, the changes could not achieve much success. It was announced that each of the directors would be given the position of VP who would bring a direct report of the functions and operations to Morales. The GBD would possess around 6 project/product managers to whom the former would assign required responsibilities (Botha et al. 2014, p.64). However, problems started soon enough. Each of these directors held different opinions regarding what methods can be appropriate to manage the respective businesses in an effective manner. One suggested that customer-oriented mentality should be injected into the overseas subsidiaries, stating the chief objective should be to fulfil the actual objective of the business. Another suggested that the responsibility of production and maintaining government relations must be given to the regional managers. The third director stated that it was regional managers needed to have their respective operational authority (Burdon et al. 2015, p.23). Hence, after sometimes, it was observed that the system of GBD created further disturbances. Subsidiaries were acting as interlopers while some more than that. Differences created needed to be solved, giving rise to the necessity of meetings, neglecting the daily issues in the process. On the other hand, the subsidiaries felt the GBD were incompetent. The GBDs lacked the cooperation and understanding among themselves. On top of that, the role and responsibility of GBDs were vague and unclear. They did not have the enthusiasm necessary for reorganisation process. It could be said that they lacked the power and credibility necessary to make things happen (Fernie and Sparks, 2014, p.12). After realising the fact that the system of GBD was ineffective, an effort was made to form and introduce World Boards which would assist the GBDs in developing strategies concerning global business. These boards comprised of managers of international and domestic organisations. Functional, geographic and product expertise represented the boards. The idea was indeed novel; however, this attempt of reorganizational changed also experienced failure. Managers who were involved in the boards did not have the sufficient courage and confidence to execute the assigned responsibilities (Jones and Marcoux, 2015, p.13). The chief reason for hesitation, all of them felt that the responsibility was too big to handle, assessing the complexity of the organisation. The reorganizational processes failed due to several reasons. In spite of the attempt to bring improvement and development, application of a proper, clear strategy was absent. An organisation works effectively only when it has the power of unity. However, Kent lacked this factor accelerating the failure of the attempts of Morales. Consolidation existed but only in terms of financial aspect which was not enough to operate the organisation. Inequality among the organisations, between the subsidiaries, the domestic and the global branches was present (Jones and Marcoux, 2015, p.31). The head office of Kent wanted to control and manage the subsidiaries which operated throughout the other countries. It needs to be recorded that the organisation was not happy with the limited amount of power it possessed over the subsidiaries and tried to make strategic movements which would enable the head office to increase its authoritative power over the subsidiaries. Feckless derives from feck, a dialect word possibly formed by a linguistic process called aphaeresis: â€Å"omission of one or more sounds or letters from the beginning of a word.† Examples of aphaeresis include: squire from esquire and coon from raccoon. Feck, which is documented as early as the 14th century, is probably a shortening of the noun effect. Feck is â€Å"energy and gumption.† A person with feck gets things done. When used to refer to a thing, the adjective feckless means, â€Å"valueless, futile, or feeble.† Used to refer to a person or a person’s actions, feckless means, â€Å"lacking energy; weak, helpless.† In modern usage, feckless is used chiefly as a synonym for irresponsible or shiftless. This latter use of feckless is especially common in the British press in headlines and articles relating to social welfare programs: Britains most feckless father? This paper seeks to assess the impacts of my birth order as a firstborn in the family to my personality and is base d on the belief that I am the way I am due to interactions with my siblings and parents and my birth order. Generally, I am assertive, responsible, dependable and kind-hearted. I am kind-hearted and warm which I feel I learnt during my childhood as I always had to let my younger siblings have a share of presents brought by our parents before I could have my share. Moreover, I am and have always been willing to share what I have with my siblings. As I grew up, my parents shaped my personality given that they always required that I take care of my sibling in school and at home especially when playing. This made me come to value the good of all. According to Human Metrics, an ISFJ person lives in a world that is kind and concrete (Human Metrics 1). Moreover, they value cooperation and harmony and are likely to become sensitive to the feelings of others. This fits into my personality given that I feel that sometimes I get too protective of others which can be traced to my birth order and interaction in the family. This is supported by what Sulloway found where he argued that firstborns are defensive than children later in the family (Boynton 73). I am also assertive where I belief that my ideas are always varied and I always defend them to the end. This was also identified to be a character of firstborns by Sulloway and this may be attributed to the fact that firstborns have their ideas given much consideration and sometimes have to make decisions for the younger siblings. My sense of self confidence is usually high and get no problems whenever putting across my ideas. I belief th is can be attributed to the fact that from an early age, my younger siblings had much trust on everything that I tell them boosting my confidence. The dominant culture in the film is the white members of society living in Australia. The subculture in the film is the Aborigines who were natives to the land before the white people settled in Australia. The natives sustained their cultural beliefs and ideologies while living in largely populated cities. The dominant white culture imposes their laws , ideas of societal values and moral beliefs on the native Aborigines. Circuit City never got into selling video games and they never sold any thriving companies’ products like Apple Computers. Also, Circuit City never improved their website and the internet is used a lot now to sell products so if they are not up to speed with everyone else people will loose interest in their store. In addition, Circuit City stopped selling appliances which can stop a lot of people from buying from you.My prediction is that Best Buy will continue to prosper in the future for many reasons. One reason I think this is because their Revenue is $20. 9 Billion. Also, their price per stock is $54. 15 (a 138% change in stock price) which is very high compared to their competitor Circuit City which is $3. 83 per stock. Best Buy’s market cap is also $18. 6 billion. In addition, there are 750 Best Buy stores throughout the United States and in Canada. As you can see, Best Buy makes a lot of money and the more money a company has the more successful they are.So, if Best Buy keeps satisfying the customers, updates their products and basically just changes with the times then I don’t see a reason for how they will ever go out of business.
